Cavanal Hill
The word “Cavanal” is derived from a French word meaning “Cave.” It was a favorite mountain for the French and Indians one hundred fifty years ago.  On the mountain’s eastern side is the site of the Historic Witteville Coal Mines.   At the turn of the century orchards was established by Captain McKenna.  Also, during the same period a Walter Beard, an early Mayor of Poteau operated a famous summer resort.  Senator Kerr constructed a summer lodge at the site where the famous resort/hotel once stood.  The Senator also planted pine seedlings on the mountain.  At this time none of the above structures exist. BASEBALL/SOFTBALL

Facilities are available for boys’ and girls’ youth leagues from 7 to 17. Men and women leagues are also organized for enjoyment and recreation. 647-8117

SOCCER LEAGUE
Poteau is a member of  FIFA International Soccer Association. Soccer fields are available for youth ages 6-19, who participate in the youth league.

FOOTBALL
There is a youth league available in football that accommodates 60 children. Boys in the fourth through sixth grade spend approximately 10 weeks at this activity.

SWIMMING
Swimming facilities are available at Twyman City Park Swimming Pool and the Choctaw Country Club. There are also many area lakes where swimming may be enjoyed.

RUNNING/JOGGING
An 8-lane, all- weather track is located at the high school football stadium and is open to the public daily. Jogging paths at both city parks.

LIBRARY
The mission of Buckley Public Library, as a branch of the Southeastern Public Library System of Oklahoma, is to be the place for yesterday's  heritage, today's information and tomorrow's dreams. They invite you to use their facilities, participate in their programs, check out their materials and become a member of the Buckley Public Library family.

ARTS & CRAFTS
The Poteau Area Arts and Humanities Council, formed in 1994, brings many cultural events to the Poteau community annually. Cavanal Hot Rod Association sponsors an annual Car Show the first weekend in May. The Poteau Chamber of Commerce sponsors "Celebrate America" on July 4th of each year with free water rides for kids of all ages (see Chamber Committees page for more information). The City of Poteau sponsors a wonderful fireworks display that same night.

GOLF
Choctaw Country Club maintains a 9-hole golf course with grass greens and staggered tees for 18-hole play. 918-647-3488   Wolf Ridge Golf Club (featured in picture above)maintains a true 18-hole golf course with a beautiful clubhouse with a splendid view of Cavanal Hill and the Poteau River Valley.  For more information call 918-647-2582.

TENNIS
Lighted tennis facilities are available at Twyman City Park and the Choctaw Country Club.

GENERAL
Poteau is located at the north edge of the scenic Ouachita National Forest which has many tourist attractions including a 55-mile skyline drive. Lake Wister State Park, Cedar Lake, and other areas are available for camping, fishing, hunting, boating, water sports, and swimming.
