Poteau is a community truly “above the ordinary” providing educational opportunities to our children and youth. Poteau Schools offer students a variety of academic and extracurricular experiences to provide a rigorous, relevant and reliable education for all students. We are proud of our students and their accomplishments. Poteau students learn in modern classrooms equipped for hands-on application of 21stcentury communication skills.

Poteau is home to many excellent schools. The public school system covers pre-kindergarten through 12thgrade. Poteau Primary School has 753 students in pre-kindergarten through second grade. The Upper Elementary School has 503 students in third, fourth and fifth grades. Pansy Kidd Middle School has 496 students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade and Poteau High School has 622 students in grades nine through twelve.

Gifted and talented programs start in the Kindergarten. An introduction to Spanish begins at the elementary level. New this year, the Upper Elementary added National Elementary Honor Society. Sports and programs offered in middle school include football, basketball, wrestling, track, softball, band, choir, golf, and cheerleading. Also offered are Science Club, Reading Club, Academic Team, FCCLA, TSA, Art Club, Honor Society and Student Council. Soccer, Speech and Drama, Chess Club, FFA, Dance Team and Show Choir are added at the high school level as well as Advanced Placement classes and alternative education classes.

Carl Albert State College

At Carl Albert State College (CASC) we offer students a great education, at a great price, and we are close to home! We have been ranked as one of the top community colleges in the nation, we have the most affordable tuition/fees in the region, and our graduation rates continue to be some of the best in the state.

We are located in Poteau, Sallisaw, and online. We offer small classes, a friendly and safe environment, and a well-rounded campus experience. The Poteau campus provides dorms for students who wish to experience on-campus living, along with many clubs, activities, and a variety of campus intramurals. Viking athletics include men and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, and co-ed cheerleading.

We offer a number of associate’s degrees as well as certificates for students in planning their course of study. For all our students, including the working adult with other commitments, we offer day, evening, and online courses to fit busy schedules. With three degrees completely online, Carl Albert State College is accessible for students from any location.

Kiamichi Technology Center

KTC has career education courses offered as early as the junior and senior year in high school. There are classes in medical, computers, electrical trades, mechanics, welding and other fields. Also offered are oil and gas drilling skills at no cost to the student with job placement assistance.
